Government resources

  • Guide to Consumer Protection Act 1987, published by Department of Trade and Industry (pdf).  The rights of people injured by defective products.

  • Customer Protection; Customers' rights with respect to goods and services; what the customer can do; unfair contract terms; additional rights when buying online, by phone or mail.  Useful links to related sites.  This page on customers' rights when making a complaint is also worth noting.

  • Trading Standards website Type in your postcode to locate your Local Trading Standards Office.  It also lists the wide range of legislation controls on the supply of goods and services.  It publishes a number of advice leaflets, e.g. on Guarantees or Warranties, which gives examples of your rights.

  • Consumer Direct You can contact them by phone (0845 number) or email.  Click on Contact Us.

  • Guide to Making a complaint, published by the Financial Services Authority which includes a number of useful links.

Other resources

  • Citizens Advice Bureaux; provides advice on a wide range of issues, including customer rights.

  • Community Legal Service Direct - free online legal information, including whether you qualify for Legal Aid.

  • The Law Centres Federation - Provides free advice by solicitors and specialist caseworkers in areas such as employment, immigration, welfare benefits, housing and discrimination.

  • You can find other helpful organisations by doing a search on keywords such as "energy + watch" or "post + watch"
