VERSE

It's November
It has been dull and damp today.
But leaves turning gold and amber
Spur us on our way

Past this house on Marine Drive
To a foot bridge within stone's throw
Where ribbons of wildness still survive
Between new build and the Rother below.

Alder, maple, oak and hazel
Mingle with knotweed in mellow shades.
Lofty boughs in a sunburst dazzle
While dusk, in long shadows, steadily invades.

A lingering look back at the weir
Through maple leaves and hawthorn bare.
It is only a short walk and one so near
To enjoy the passing seasons like this autumn's fanfare.
