Appendix 2:  Sample search of the online 1881 census

1.      Please note that the LDS site provides a variety of resources.  I only used the IGI Index in May 2006 and found a useful snippet of information there.  This is included in Appendix 5 under May 2006.

This page is only concerned with the use of their 1881 census search engine.

Fill in the form as shown below:

·          Select the 1881 British census

·          Type in the name, Charles Millington

·          Click on Search

  1. This may bring up a long list of names - in this case the search engine found 82 instances of Charles Millington.  Use the browser’s search tool (Edit/Find) to find the record for the person born at a given place.  I searched for "Derby" and looked at record 6 for Barlow since I was given this as Charles' birthplace.  But, the names of the siblings did not match those of Charles' siblings as given by Pollie and her sister Kathleen.

  1. Out of curiosity, I also looked up Charles Millington in record 5, who was born in Brampton. Clicking on his name brought up his details, as shown below.  The Source Information given at the bottom of the following table, will be explained in the Library page under The census place indexes.

  1. We need to find the siblings to check that we have the correct Charles.  We can find this information by clicking on household to the right of the name, Charles Millington.

  1. Could this be the family we are after with Pollie's father Charles, and her uncles Tom (John Thomas) and Sam?  Note that Hannah Millington was born in Upleader, Gloucester.  This is somewhat unusual and served to trace this family in other censuses.

  2. Note that by clicking on previous or next household, we can 'visit' dwellings in the order visited by the census enumerator (the person who wrote down the data).  By doing this, I found that Hannah Maria Needham (Charles' first wife) had lived just up the road at Oxton Rakes.  Copying all of this information was useful since we later found  in the 1891 census that her brother Thomas Needham was their immediate neighbour in Grassmoor.  With these circumstantial evidence, we can provisionally assume that we have found Pollie's father and his family so that we can trace them in other sources to confirm our findings.

  1. Note that each data record lists the source information at the bottom of the table.  The significance of these items will become clear when we look at the census data in the Library.

  2. Having found father Charles and his family in the free 1881 census, we decided to look for Pollie's mother and her family.  I typed in Harriot Meads - the name I was given.  Despite the variation in spelling, the search engine found Harriet Meade (note that the spelling is different to that reported by freebmd), who was born born in Clay Cross.

This information was again copied in its entirety for double-checking.

  1. Having found grandfather Meade, we were able to go back to freebmd to find out a bit more about her maternal grandparents.  Note the variations in spelling of Meads/Meade.
