Appendix 3:  Place name search using search engines

 1.      Try Google Search for place names; you MAY be lucky.  When I typed in “Barber Lane” + Cutthorpe, I got  a list which included :

Derbyshire Journey Planner

1239 Cutthorpe, Main Road /Barber Lane 0744 0945 1045 .... 1245 Upper Newbold, CutthorpeRd / BarlowRd 0747 0949 1049 .... 1249 Upper Newbold, NewboldRd adj ...
www.ukbus.co.uk/cgi/jptt.exe?c=derb& a=&z=&h=1464189&s=Y&x=3& - 25k - Supplemental Result - Cached - Similar pages

This is the website of http://www.ukbus.co.uk/.  When I clicked on the main link, Google could not find the web address, probably because this refers to an old timetable which is no longer online.

2.      If this happens, try clicking on Cached on the last line.  In my case it retrieved the following page which included the timetable for Barber Lane; only a grossly edited and highlighted extract is shown below.

http://www.ukbus.co.uk/cgi/jp.exe?c=derb&s=Y&a=000003%25Chesterfield&o=Barber+Lane&z=001877%25Dronfield&q=&w=1&y=&i=d&t=Now&T=&v=000000%25+&p=&r=R

3.      I clicked on Barber Lane and got a map (from the multimap site) centred on that bus stop.  I then used multimap to get a smaller-scale Ordnance Survey map, centred on Barber Lane, so that I could check it out on the ground if necessary.  The second stop is at Curves Cottage which is right beside South Terrace - the place of interest to me.

4.  The Public Transport Unit of Derbyshire County Council www.derbyshire.gov.uk/buses noted that "this particular site will be replaced in the near future by a completely different one, which will offer a similar facility but will have a totally different web address; and, as it will be structured
differently, a search engine such as Google will not necessarily locate a place in the new database."
So, please note that this is just an example to point out that Google often finds pages in its cache, which might help you with your search, after the site ceases to exist.
