Appendix 5:  Things to follow up

  1. I searched genuki for cemeteries, death and burial records of the Millington surnames, in case some of these turned out to be related.

MILLINGTON

George

S  24 Feb 1814

s/o John & Anne; of Ingamanthorpe

LDS/JM

This is interesting because Ingamanthorpe is just up the road from South Terrace.  John & Ann were recorded as the parents of Pollie's grandfather, John.  COuld this refer to them?

Families tended to give their children the forenames of parents and grandparents.  The names - Hannah, Henry, and Martha - occur in the tree traced to date.  So, these are worth checking up on.

  1. While I had been able to trace back to Pollie's great grandparents Millington, my data on the maternal side of the family was patchy partly because of variations in the spelling of surnames.  I tried to find one member of the family who was not at home during the 1901 census by searching the following site.  This site is useful for finding the civil parish, birth places and ages of likely targets for later investigation.  Note that this site charges for the household information.

This suggests that Catherine Meads is the right person - the age and place of birth fit.  So, she may be found in the 1901 census records for North Wingfield.  Nellie Mead is of the right age - but she may not be the grand daughter of Catherine.  The records for Nottingham were searched using freebmd without success.  But, she could be investigated at a later stage.

3.  1837online.com - to search for bmd details between 1837 - 2002

https://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/

You can search within a 10 year period.  The search engine will list all the pages which contain the given name.  It is impossible to limit the search by region as you can with freebmd.  So, you tend to get a lot of hits - The only additional information provided for each hit, is the range of surnames found on the page which contains the name.  You can view images of these pages by purchasing a number of units.   However, their guidance notes only show the same sort of images you can retrieve freely through freebmd.  It has data on many other themes.
I was not tempted to use this service at this stage.

4.  Marriages in St Peter & St Paul's Church in Old Brampton - see list in Library
John married Hannah Turner in 1837 (Grandparents of Pollie)
      - Could there be a transcription error in the date?
John would have been only 12 and Hannah only 4.
So, is this a different couple?  If so, Hannah's surname may not be Turner.
I followed this up in May 2006, after completing the rest of this web,

5.  To do:

     - look at parish registers on microfilm in the Library and at Matlock
     - where was grandmother Hannah in 1891? She had left South Terrace but was not with Charles in Grassmoor.
       What was her surname?

     - Where was Harriet in 1891?  She was in Clay Lane in 1881 and in Grassmoor in 1901.
     - Need to find out a bit more about Long Row in Barlow.  Family believe that they were miner's cottages and
that Pollie's father was born there.  I need to find evidence for this.

Data found After Two Weeks in May 2006

  1. Pollie's paternal grandmother
Since the 1837 date of marriage of John Millington to Hannah Turner did not seem to fit, I decided to search for a Hannah born around 1833 in Upleader in Gloucester.  I wondered if I could find her through the LDS International Genealogical Index.

    1. IGI index.
      Click on :
      http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
as you did in Appendix 2.  This time, choose the option International Genealogical Index from the list on the left of the screen.

    2. I initially searched for birth/christening of a Hannah in Gloucester but gave up after working through 4000 records, searching for "Upl".

    3. My search for the marriage of John Millington to a Hannah around 1857 also failed to find one born in Gloucester.

    4. I then used freebmd to search for the marriages with groom John MIllington with spouse Hannah and H with no success.  The next search for John Millington married around 1857 +/- 5 years listed a few including one in 1858.  A Hannah Spiers was married in the same quarter.  Was she our Hannah?

    5. So, I returned to the IGI Index and searched for birth/christening of Hannah Spiers in Gloucester.  This found the Hannah Spiers born on 11 Oct 1835 in Upleadon, Gloucester to Charles and Anne Spiers.  I had not been able to find Upleader (which was the place name repeatedly recorded in the census records) on maps.  But Upleadon was very near Ross-on-Wye on the River Leadon in Gloucester.  So, it does look as if there was a recording error on the census forms.  It is also highly likely that Hannah Spiers is Pollie's paternal grandmother.

    6. The marriage of John Millington to Hannah Turner in 1837 remains a mystery.  Was Hannah Spiers the second wife of John Millington?  If so, Charles may have had step siblings.  Pollie has mentioned an uncle John who lived in Sheffield.  It may be worth investigating the parish records for age of John at his marriage in 1837.
