Appendix 6:  Sample image from the 1871 census

The following image is reproduced here with the kind permission of The National Archives (TNA) Image Library.  It was printed from the census microfilm reel 9 (Public Records Office Reference RG12).  The image is of page 8 of piece 3614.  The page number appears on the top left.  The schedule numbers are listed in column 1.  The Millington household has a schedule number of 6 and lived on Barber Lane.  The images for the 1841 and 1851 censuses are unclear and the writing on the 1961 census is beautiful but not very legible.  In this census, John's wife is recorded as being Emma - not Hannah.  But, her age and place of birth suggest that she is the same person, who is referred to as Hannah in subsequent censuses and the announcement of death in The Derbyshire Times.  Charles, John Thomas and and Sam Swindell are also listed with other children, including older siblings.
