Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis?

If you have persistent Blepharitis, please see http://rani.aeshost.net/Medical/NHS/Experiences/Blepharitis/Blepharitis.html
Castor oil does seem to cure belpharitis when it is caused by a local infection. But, please see update of 27 April 2007 which points out that castor oil cannot cure symptoms caused by allergens and pollutants.

Remember: let the liquid cool before washing inflamed eyes.

Hi, I have a few questions:

-What does the BP stand for in 'castor oil BP'?

-What is 'neat' castor oil?

-Have you tried any eyedrops containing castor oil such as Refresh Endura with satisfactory results? Obviously 'certified' drops such as this would have a lower concentration of castor oil..

It seems the major concern would be that since this castor oil is not made for ophthalmologic use, it is not preserved as such, and may be prone to bacterial invasion. This is the only thing preventing me from trying this, I may buy some and try it for a few days, however.

Where can you buy this?

Hi derakht - I'll answer your questions in separate comments.

<<-What does the BP stand for in 'castor oil BP'?>> It stands for British Pharmacopoeia - a book listing approved drugs. See below

<<Where can you buy this? >>
We buy it from reputable pharmacists in Britain who sell a range of old fashioned products. The castor oil is distributed by the licence holder Thornton & Ross in Huddersfield as a relief for constipation. (This needs explanation in another page/blog). Thornton & Ross have a website. They are helpful. I will ask the pharmacy and try and provide more information.

In which country are you? If you find a good supplier, please could you post it here?

More answers for derakht
<< -What is 'neat' castor oil? >>
Sorry - I should have said Virgin Castor Oil.

<<-Have you tried any eyedrops containing castor oil such as Refresh Endura with satisfactory results? Obviously 'certified' drops such as this would have a lower concentration of castor oil.. >>

No - mainly because I knew that Virgin Castor Oil was harmless having used it in my childhood. See reports (pointed to in my website) on diluted oil.

<<It seems the major concern would be that since this castor oil is not made for ophthalmologic use, it is not preserved as such, and may be prone to bacterial invasion.>>

We decant some oil into a separate container for use (see my web page) and have had no problems.

Good Luck

Hi Connie
Sorry that you have got it. Even castor oil will initially make it smart - but you should notice an improvement within 4 days. Have a look at my web page (link given in my first post at head of this thread) and also at feedback at the forum (link in my post above yours).

Please feel free to come back with Qns after reading them. Different people have tried different ways of applying castor oil - most with success. But read my web page first to note warnings.

Good Luck - and Merry Christmas

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Monday, January 29, 2007 9:40 PM

I have had Bleph in one eye for 18 months - mostly the lower eyelid. After discovering your website, I have been applying castor oil on the lids nightly for about 3 months. It has certainly helped but not cured it. My eyelid is still inflamed (but this isn't noticeable if I don't rub it) and produces a small amount of pus. Is there anything else I can do to cure it, or should I just keep applying the castor oil for longer?

I make my own natural yoghurt, eat plenty of fish, white meat, frest fruit & veg, drink water, and live in a clean, country environment.

Thank you very much for this life-saving (and eyesight-saving) information. It is sadly typical that doctors will not listen to your wonderful knowledge and advice. Thank goodness you shared it with the rest of us. Keep up the brilliant work! :-)

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis @ Tuesday, January 30, 2007 5:40 PM

Dear Eleanor
Thanks for your feedback. Firstly, I must re-state that I am not a medical professional and I am just relaying information based on our reading, personal trials and experience. To come to your Qns.
<< Is there anything else I can do to cure it, or should I just keep applying the castor oil for longer? >>
My husband only had bleph for 8 months and it castor oil cleared it in 11 days. Since you have had it for longer - it may take a bit longer to clear up. Continued use of castor oil will not hurt your eye - but is bleph your problem? I will address this before looking at what else might help.

<< You said that you still get some pus >>
This makes me think that your problem might be some other infection. Bleph attacks a sick eye and this might have masked some other problem. Now that your bleph has cleared up to some extent - it might be worth seeing a doctor again. I dont know where you live - but if you are in the UK and have had this problem for 18 months, you could ask to be referred to the eye Dept in a hospital.

<< I make my own natural yoghurt, eat plenty of fish, white meat, frest fruit & veg, drink water, and live in a clean, country environment. >>
It strikes me that the home-made yoghurt might not have the right bacterial culture. We have biolive yoghurt - but I always keep a bottle of QUEST Acidophilus in the fridge. My husband went a course of it while he was on antibiotics and while using castor oil. We also have it periodically to keep the guts healthy. It is also very good at clearing up cystitis. I tried a few other brands (not all of them) but did not find them effective.

<< What else can you do >>
If I were you I would be trying the following:
1. Try the doctor again

2. If you are in UK, some GPs can refer you to a homeopath under NHS. Find a reputable practitioner by contacting the lead organisation in your country.

3. Try the following herbs.
3a. Pour boiling water on a camomile tea bag. Let it steep for about 5 mins. Take the T-bag out and when it is cool enough to handle, clean the eye lids and around the eye, using the tea to wash the bag. Then put the bag over your closed eye and lie down for 10 mins and think happy positive thoughts. Do this before you apply the castor oil and in the morning (if you have time).

3b. Try taking homeopathic Eyebright 6x. I take this before the hayfever season and it has not done me any harm. My books say that this is the best herb for the eyes and for purulent eyes.

3c. You seem to be leading a healthy lifestyle. It is true that smoking and other excesses makes your body more vulnerable to disease. But, a healthy lifestyle does not always protect one. My husband was very healthy - then he got a blood clot in his eye - the consultants dont know why this happens. No matter what happens, it always helps to have a positive outlook and to be optimistic. I think you are past the worst - and with a bit of help, your eye will recover.

Let us know how you got on - so that we can learn from each other.

Wishing you better health in 2007

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Wednesday, January 31, 2007 9:11 PM

Thank you for your suggestions. I have started with the Camomile teabag and will start the Eyebright v soon. Should the Eyebright be once daily?

Yes, my yoghurt has both acidophilus and bifidus and I also take acidophilus live capsules from time to time.

I know you're not a "medical professional" but most of what is known by doctors has been arrived at empirically, and this is what you have done (and continue to do) with castor oil & bleph. Good for you, I say!

I will certainly keep you updated of any changes or progress. Happy to know it might help anyone else in the same situation.

# re: Eyebright? @ Friday, February 02, 2007 9:24 AM

You need to follow the instructions given - different makes seem to have different dosages. I have taken Waleda pillules and put 2 under my tongue when I go to bed before the hay fever season kciks in. It does not stop the hayfever and but does stop burning itchiness of the eyes - and that enables me to drive short distances with air conditioning on. It also stops my glasses steaming up. So, eyebright has an effect on the eyes.

My cousin came over from Malaysia in the hayfever season and we had to take drastic action on holiday. The local Holland & Barret suggested Eyebright tincture which did not help him much. But, you could try a dilution of the tincture to wash your eyes as well. Let us know which is more effective - camomile tea (cheap) or Eyebright tincture (expensive).

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Thursday, March 01, 2007 2:51 PM

Hello Shirley

Your pharmacist should be able to help you. If you look at the 2 links in the first post and another lower down, you will find that people living in other countries have noted what they got and how.

I tell you how we use it in my first link - but others have noted what they have done in the blepharitis site.

I am not avoiding a straight answer - it is just that what others are doing may suit you better. But, while you have a look at the blogs, you could just put a little drop in a saucer and apply it to your eyelids with clean hands. But do this after washing your eyes clean of all the gunge. Good luck - do let us know how you get on. I am sure you will get better.

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Friday, June 29, 2007 10:46 AM

Check your shampoo labels. You will notice that the majority of them have "sodium lauryl sulfate" and "sodium laureth sulfate". These are two very cheap foaming agents that companies put into their products. They are also used in car engine degreasers and farm machinery degreasers. In other words, they are very harmful to the skin. When water and shampoo run down your face and over your eyes, conditions like blepharitis and dandruff get worse. Jason Organic Shampoo, 84% Aloe Vera brand is the very best, in my opinion, shampoo to use since it has none of these. In fact it states this on their label which prompted me to do a google search on these two ingredients. It was "eye opening" to say the least. My dandruff in my eyebrows is completedly gone, althouth it took about three months, I did notice the difference in less than a week. I highly recommend switching to this brand. Other brands that didn't contain these two harmful elements were not very good. I cannot believe my dermatologist and eye doctor had no clue about the harmful effects Sodium lauryl sulfate has on the skin. Hope this helps. Dr. Larry Van Such

I have kept my blepharitis under control by washing my eyelids with Jason Tea tree oil soap, and spraying colloidal silver directly into/on my eyes whenever the blepharitis gets worse. This, along with a mostly Organic, low sugar, high vegetable diet has helped me!

# desperate for a cure @ Sunday, September 16, 2007 3:51 AM

I have had this condition apparently for a month.
I was diagnosed a week ago by an optholmologist.
I had many questions to ask but he was only interested in rushing me out.

He told me it just meant the oil duct was blocked and to use drops and the boiling flannel treatment.

neither have helped.

I dont have all of these yukky symptoms people describe such as pus, or scaling, or discharge, or flaking.

I only have agonising pain in my left eye, and an accute sensitivity to light.
My eyes also throb when the pain is at its worst and I can't watch tv or even open my eye at all when the pain is bad.

I dont believe my eye lids are at all swallen or unusual looking, however the optholmologist insisted this was the condition i have.

i risk losing my job because i work in an office in a call centre for a bank so i am on a computer all day. one of the bosses caught me with sunglasses on because it was the only way i could have my eyes open because they were so so light sensitive.

i risk losing my job in the near future if this continues.

i really need a solution. another website stalks about a $360 2 month course of tablets that will cure it forever.

when it is in moments of agony i really do consider gauging my eye out. the pain is intolerable.

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Monday, September 17, 2007 10:29 AM

First let me say how sorry I am to hear about your problem. I can understand your anxiety regarding your job.

If it is blepharitis, check out my castor oil page at:
http://blepharitisforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=48.0

Some people have discovered that their problem is due to allergies - have you been doing something unusual, like taking up swimming or wearing a different brand of make up or shampoo?

Light sensitivity can be due to a variety of reasons. If you are working at a call centre, could it be due to staring at the bright screen for long hours?

If so, I have found that homeopathic Ruta Grav is helpful. However, there may be something else wrong. Depending on your age, could it be age-related macular degeneration? In my husband's case, a blod clot in the central vein and bleeding onto the retina were only discovered at the hospital using their machines. Are you in UK - if so, you could ask your doctor to refer you to the hospital. Or, if the pain is unbearable, you could go to Accident & Emergency. My husband's doctor asked him to do that and he got an appointment first thing in the morning the following day. I assume that you have been checked out for glaucoma.

Unfortunately, if your eyes are sensitive to light you have to wear dark glasses. If doing so does not affect your job performance, they may allow it while you are getting the problem investigated.

Dont worry unduly. Do what you must and take things as they come. Please note that as I have said in my disclaimer, I am not a trained medical professional. I just post things which have worked for us up on my site and this has helped some - but not all - suffering from bleph.

Good Luck.

# How Blephartis is affecting me @ Friday, December 07, 2007 8:08 AM

I have been a blephartis sufferer for 2 years now. I started with my left eye, then after purchasing an eyelid cleaning kit, it affected my right eye. I have had about 18 flare ups in 2 years. I have seen an eye specialist who said it was due to my overactive oil glands in my eye that was causing blocked eyelash ducts. I have seen countless specialists that tell me the same thing. They advise to place a warm compression on my eyes, massage them and use a baby shampoo solution with warm water to clean the crusts in between the eyelashes, which is what i do every day. I have a flar up right now. It is now beginning to lower my self-esteem and confidence, as i don't go to work when it is really bad. I won't go out to functions either. My eye looks like I have been physically punched as the swelling is on the top lid and beneath my lower lashes to exactly how someone looks if they have been punched in the eye. Please give me some advice, I am at the end of my tether now. Thanks Tee.

# Trying the Castor Oil with other measures.. @ Saturday, January 05, 2008 6:21 AM

Have had persistent blepharitis in one eye for a long time, tried several approaches and had ophalmic consultation which gave no real advice except using baby shampoo eyelid washes (was already doing that with marginal improvement). Condition made worse by flying which I need to do for my job in aerospace industry.

Decided to try a different regime: virgin castor oil on eyelid up to about 1/4'' from eye itself(not directly on eye margin where it seems to increase redness) and using weak bicarb of soda wash for eyelid washes. Seems to have helped in one week and eyelid is looking much better (less red and inflamed). It's early days bit it is the first time anything noticeable helped. Also taking one Flaxseed oil capsule and one Cod Liver Oil capsule daily....

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Sunday, January 06, 2008 7:11 AM

Wonderful news Andy. You can put the oil nearer the margins - it will irritate initially but you will soon get ovewr it. Good idea taking flaxseed and cod liver oil as well. Also, pay attention to diet in case the condition is caused by yeast explosion following antibiotics. See my page linked to in my initial post (first item of this thread).

I wish you full recovery. And, thanks for the feedback.

I have a crusty, buildup in my eyelash follicles that is impossible to remove and my eyelashes are falling out! I've tried organic baby shampoo soaks and rinsing with lots of warm water. I even tried vitamin e oil to loosen it but that just irritated my eyes.
My first symptom was really that my eyelashes started falling out. My eyes are/were a bit dry but not red, imflamed or swollen (until I soaked them in vit. e oil). I can't get into a specialist for 3 weeks and am wondering if I'll have eyelashed left by then? It's really bothering me to lose all my lashes and no one can give me an answer that they will grow back again. Any help would be much appreciated. I've had the condition about 2 weeks now. Thanks so much.

Hello Lisa
I know how distressing this is. But, I am not a medical person but have only recorded our experience (click on link to my page at the start of this thread). Have you tried chamomile tea - use lukewarm tea bag dipped in the tea. It is cleansing and soothing. Then try castor oil as instructed on my page. It may sting initially. If it does not help within 2 weeks, the chances are you are allergic to your make up or something else.

Try not to panic - you may also find other tips in the blepharitis forum. Good Luck.

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Sunday, January 06, 2008 7:27 PM

Hello again. Thank you for getting back to me so promptly. I was wondering if the crustiness goes away by itself with the castor oil or if you have to scrub it. Also, do you need to rinse the eyes off in the a.m. or is it O.K. to let it be? Does the crustiness promote bacteria or will it eventually sluff off on it's own? I will definitely try the chamomile tea and castor oil tonight. Many thanks!

lisa ann

# re: Castor Oil cure for Blepharitis? @ Monday, January 07, 2008 9:54 AM

Hello Lisa Ann
Read my web page if you can find the time. The crustiness has to be washed off with the camomile tea and the eyes should be allowed to dry before the castor oil is applied on the outside of the eyelid. You can rub it on with clean finger tip or with cotton buds. Leave it on overnight but wash it off in the morning with camomile tea since the oil is sticky.

Leave off the make up until you are completely cleat and for a couple of weeks after that. If the blepharitis returns when you rerstart the makeup, the chances are that there is something in the make up which is not suiting you. Let us know how you get on - good luck.

I have had inflamed eyelids for about a year now. Im almost possitive its blepharitis. For the most part its not bad at all, only occuring when im really tired, but lately its gotten worse. About 6 weeks ago i used visine advanced relief to sooth my eyes. This caused my eyes to become really bloodshot, which caused my eyelids to become even more inflamed. After being off the visine for a week my eyes are somewhat bloodshot still(getting better) but the blepharitis has only worsened. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think the castor oil would be good for me? Im seeing an eye doctor this week so hopfully he can help as well. Do you you of any 100% cure. Thank you so much for your time and help.

Dear Brian

I am sorry that you suffering. There are many causes of belpharitis - so I dont know if you can recover rapidly. I dont know much about medications - you need to check out the blepharitisforum.com for such information. There is no harm in trying castor oil. Please read my page (see first link on this thread)since it also mentions some other known causes. Castor oil is cheap - get it from a reputable pharmacist. If your condition is helped by castor oil, you will know within 2 weeks. If it does not help, stop it. It may irritate during the first few days of application. Wash your eye first with warm (not hot) chamomile tea, which is cleansing and soothing. You can use tea bags. Do let us know either way - whether it helps or not.

Good Luck

I too was told to wash with baby shampoo..and soak with hot water.but only makes my eyes more irritated. I will try the castor oil and the tea bags..see if that works. I also am unable to wear eye make-up no matter what brand I use. I am terribly allergic to all cosmetics, plus all face creams...is there any face cream that will not creap into my eyes ducts? would love to know. Patricia

Hi Patricia

I am sorry I have just seen your post. You may find that almond oil or grapeseed oil will give you a silkier skin than most creams. Also, they are very cheap in comparison. If you just pour a little oil into another container for use over 2-3 days and discard the rest, it would not matter if a little oil seeped into the eyes.

Do let us know if castor oil helps. It seems to have cleared the problem for a lot of people.

Bye for now

If it does not clear it 2 weeks, then you are probably suffering from an allergic reaction to something but see your doctor.

hello, well done everyone for sharing, i have a similar experience to some of you, being diagnosed with blepharitis but coming home a bit empty handed and with nothing that fixes it. My doctor at the eye hospital did recommend one thing that helped a little with general eye health, that was fish oils with omega 3 6 and 9. but getting to the point of all these threads, castor oil. there is one unusual and unpleasant word, that us blepharitis sufferers need to look into. demodex. the two often come together and cause each other, an unhealthy eye is prone to an overinfestation. demodex mites live in the eyelid at base of lashes, eat our eye liquids, and oh..you don't want to know. I only found this out after moaning about my eyes to my best friend in germany who is an eye doctor, and she said it was a possibility, and that cleaning the eyes with CASTOR OIL 3 times a day was one of the more successful ways to deal with it. It takes months of vigilant cleaning and exfoliation and applying the oil. the mites don't like it, my friend said it suffocates them - BUT on my research over last two days, its not that simple. i just saw all your posts and thought i'd add this as another reason to support the use of castor oil. I am now going to try this, and use tea tree oil because there are some laboratory reports that suggest this is also useful. all reports and information western and eastern, say that squeezing the eye in the way that blepharitis sufferers are taught to do, 3 times a day is essential in the treatment of demodex mites because it helps push them out. Oh it sounds crazy, and i really thought is was..but i realise now its something we have to seriously consider. here are some links for all of you, thankyou for this wonderful site which has helped me.

I have to take time off work when this happens n they dun like it obviously. i feel i may get fired soon wich really upsets me I can't believe there is no form of disability for this disease or at least a protection policy or sumthing jesus. i want to work i dun wanna be on disability but i'd like to be protected at my job like this isn't my fault i wanna be at work but i can't see how can u work if u can't see sumone explain this? its impossible.
I feel the time of protest on this disease has come we need ppl to bring this forward. like its bad enough i'm in extreme pain plus a lose 90$ a day i miss from work then on top of it they expect me to pay 15$ for a stupid doctors note every fricken time so its like i lose $ and then pay $ for the pain i went through thats f*3kin BS i'm sorry again for my language but this is crap...
anyway back on topic I do know there are 2 forms of bleph inner and outer n i'm assuming i have inner since it burns really really bad n don't stop for hours but this conola oil sounds different dunno if ive tried it or if its been in any of the 20-30 drops that i've tried but sounds worth trying so i'll hunt it down n try it and will let everyone know how it goes. but seriously the gouvornment needs to recognise this as a disability n i think i'm gonna bring this up to a member of parliment n see what can be done.
sorry if i rambled on but like i said i've been sitting here 5 hours straight in extreme pain im in a whole different state of mind right now sry n thanks 4 the advice n i'll get back yo ya's cya

Hey, Im 19 years old, had blepharitis since i was about 15-ish, young age to get it, but i believe it was caused when i was hit in one of my eyes with a ball, playing sport, and as a result had many hospital visits, checkups and all that stuff on a regular basis at eye and ear hospitals and then the general hospital, only started to notice an inflamed eyelid on my left eye within a few weeks of my last checkup there, went to the doctors about it and he said it was just a "stye" or something, and gave me some ointment for it, said to keep applying it for 2 weeks and it would dissapear.. well it didnt.. then it made a very minor appearance on the bottom lid on my right eye :( basically i didnt know what it was at all, and it seemed that if i didnt touch it or sleep on that side of my face, it wasnt TOO bad so i could get away with not too many people noticing, whenever i tried picking off the bits under that eyelid, it would inflame quite badly..

In the last week, i started searching around google and everything to see what these symptoms might actually BE, fortunate enough i eventually stumbled across the dreaded blepharitis.. at first i was really scared and worried, as there was no dead set cure for it, i didnt want to look disfigured and feel ugly because of the visual redness under that eye.

4 days ago, i began to follow what the general cleaning system is for it, warm/hot compression, gently scrubbing it away and all the rest, and then i decided to use some moisturiser soap that my sister has in the bathroom on it, as it is like dandruff, dry and such, and as i write this now, my blepharitis has already diminished nearly entirely, and i feel so much more confident and happy with my progress in such a short space of time! Thanks for all the info on how to deal with it, i know im probably considered extremely lucky lol, dont mean to be gloating or anything, but i feel unstoppable right now! I will be sure to update next week to let you know how my blepharitis is faring.

Regards, Shane.

Dear Ryan Embry

I am really sorry to hear of your suffering. Firstly, it is [b]castor oil[\b] - not canola oil.
Secondly, it sounds like you are having an allergic reaction to something. Have you looked through the blepharitis forum (link in one of my earlier posts)? Tearing/burning eyes sometimes repond to Eyebright or Euphrasia. You may get it from health shops. I get this problem at the start of the hayfever season and I find that Weleda Euphrasia 6x pills help a bit. Might be worth checking out if you have an allergy. Try wearing wrap round glasses for a while, even when you go to sleep. If your eyes get better after about 4 days, then the chances are you are allergic to something either at home or at work or in the environment. It may just be seasonal. There are a lot of people who have got over their problems - see the bleph forum.
What job do you do? I am allergic to solvents in DIY stuff and even in kitchen cleaning agents. They not only make my eyes water and burn, they even burn my skin and make my nose very sore as well. Good Luck

Hi Shane
Always nice to hear good news. Well done - think positive and it will help. Try camomile tea bags as I said in my web page and castor oil as well. If there is some residual infection, it will clear it. It is quite cheap. Look at the thread on castor oil & bleph on the blepharitis forum - it is an excellent site. Thank you for your post.

Just found your site, I was diagnosed with dry eyes 30 yrs ago and have been using eye drops and eye ointment since. About 3 yrs ago I was diagnosed with Blepharitis, which, coupled with the dry eye syndrome made my eyes so unbareable that the eye Consultant inserted two minute tubes into both eyes to stop some of the tears draining away. At first this procedure seemed to help but over time I find I'm back to square one, even though I do a daily regime of bathing the eyes with warm water and use sterile eye wipes, but on reading the positive results on your webpage as from tomorrow I'm going to try the method of cammomile tea and olive oil as suggested. I will keep you posted and thank Heaven I've found this site. Take care for now. Celia

It is a bit of a shock - it looks as if the site is up for sale. We must thank the administrator for having kept it going for so long - it is an onerous task. I'll have to update my web page - and remove the link to that site.

I wish the administrator had given us time to note some content on there which we had taken for granted - e.g. I would have liked to have posted the thread with feedback on the use of castor oil.

Dear Mahes

I wanted to thank you for your posting on treating blepharitis with virgin
castor oil. I found your advice after a painful spring and summer in which
I had two chalazia surgically removed and my eyelids have been very
inflamed and sore. There seemed to be no end to the problem, a fresh cyst
would form where the old one had been removed.

I tried the Chamomile tea and castor oil remedy in desperation. It works.

This afternoon I went to Moorfields eye hospital for a follow up to the
last chalazia procedure. I told them about the castor oil treatment. The
consultant appeared never to have heard of it. It certainly makes me
wonder at the limitations of conventional medicine.

Thanks again

A lot of eyelashes fell and many of them didn't grow again.
Do the eyelashes grow after the inflammation gone?

Castor oil is very sticky. It will come off with chamomile tea or even ordinary black or green tea. Yes, you should wash it off in the morning - only need to work on the lids, not the eyes themselves. Dont wear eye make up since you may be allergic to it. And, if you dont want sticky eyes while you are amongst people, just wash your eyelids again at night before applying the castor oil. If it does not clear in 2 weeks, the chances are that your problem (e.g. an allergy) cannot be treated by this remedy.

I want to share you at the way i treat my blepharitis (almost 3 days).
1.Every day i clean my eyelids with Chamomile tea after that spread virgin castor oil on my lashes & lids.
I perform this treatment 3 times a day.
I want to know i am doing it right.
2. My lids are very irritated, is it ok?
3. Today i had yellow secretion in my eyes, is it sign for something?

Thanks, Lior.

Hi there!

I am a 24 year old male from Australia who after suffering from reoccuring Styes for the last year FINALLY took himself along to an eye specialist who told me I have Blepharitis. The Styes I get are quite bad and usually have to take time off work until they have passed. It all started last November after I got back from travels in India and Nepal. A couple of weeks after I got back I got my first bad Stye in my life. Interestingly enough, a couple of weeks before the end of my travels I was really unwell and had to stay in a Nepalese hospital... I had a form stomach bacteria which really knocked me around. Could this be a contributing factor to myself getting Bleph?

I do not suffer from dry-eyes or any other symptoms except inflammed eyelids and bad styes.

Does anyone who has suffered from styes have any insights or thoughts?

Much appreciated!

PS. The eye specialist told me is NO cure. I decided not to buy into that thought... Im glad I found this page! Thankyou!!!

I thought I was the only one that suffered from this awful disease, I'm almost relieved knowing that I'm not the only sufferer. I have suffered from DRY, RED, IRRITATED, eyes since childhood (now 38 yrs), Over the past 8 years have become worse and practically unbearable over the past 3 years. Just came home from specialist who said I had blepheritis, as well as terigiams (??spelling) in both eyes. My eyes hurt so bad, I am having a hard time functioning and keeping up with my 4 young children. I have plugs put in my eyes every so often for the dryness, but I am ready for sautering (permanent plugs) I will try what is mentioned with the previous write ups and plead with anyone who has had success to tell me it will be okay. I'll try the chammomile tea, castor oil, colloidal silver, flax seed oil, eyebright, starting right now, How long should I keep this up before I should see any improvement? Also the Dr. gave me minocycline for the infection. Should I use Lid Care Eye Wash pads as well? I pray that all who suffer with this has found comfort in these remedies and pray I'm next.
Thank You.

I am not a doctor. I just report natural cures which worked for us. Bleph. infects the lids - usually when you are run down. Sometimes, symptoms similar to bleph occur as an allergic reaction. Castor oil will not clear the latter but it seems to clear infections (bacterial and fungal). With chamomile, you have to test first on some other part of your body to ensure that you are not allergic to this herb. People who are allergic to Ragwort and/or chrysanthemum can also be allergic to chamomile. If you are allergic to chamomile, try some other cleansing herb - even ordinary green/black tea is quite good - so also is Linden or Lime blossom tea, which is slimy.

Remember - if your problem does not ease within 2 weeks, the chances are you have an allergy reaction. So, there i no point in continuing with castor oil etc. You then need to find the allergen, which may be household chemicals or yeast-feeding food. If you trust the self-healing powers of the body, focus on building up your general health (avoiding the wrong food for you - eating a balanced diet etc.) and note how everything you do affects you, you WILL get over this problem.

Another thing you need to watch out for is that the circulation of fluids in sick eyes is sluggish - and this results in the formation of calcite crystals. They cn scrath the cornea and lids causing ulcers. Castor oil does not cure these. My husband has these removed by an eye specialist (just a case of picking them off using the right tools) and using medication with hydrochloric acid to stop the crystals forming.

I hope this helps.
Finally, stay positive - it helps. Good Luck.

Hello, 4 months ago I made the worst mistake of my life. I got my eyelashes permed, I know it is very unwise and I have always been overprorective when it comes to eye but I was quite depressed and thought I'd do something to look and feel betterbut I didi it... The thing is the product was way strong, my eyes itched and I yelled but the girl said it was normal and didn't remove the product. Once it was over, my eyes looked horrible.
I thing the product got int he eyes, plus she put too much pressure on the eyelashes and it lasted over 2 hours. Besides, it felt as if she was pulling them out when she took the rod off.

Lids were terrible swollen, the left one specially, I rapidly lost most of my lashes on the right one and the new ones are thinner and fewer... the left one, instead, still has the treated lashes and is far more swollen.

Ophtalmologists didn't do anything about it. They said there is no follicular burn.

I didn't improve till I found a great homeopathic doctor. Homeopathy, omega 3 and ozone worked wonders. Unfortunately, ozonetherapy is no longer suitable for me, my veins proved to be damaged so the improvement was huge at first but now it is very slow. I still have some remaining swelling and wondered if I could help. I'm very worried, my case is special because there is not bacteria involved but a chemical and lechanical agression. I need antiinflammatory agents. Coudl you tell me exactly what to do, please? I'm desperated and I'm beginnning to feel the "pressure" I had ceased to feel on my left lid. I need to get rid othe remainig swelling in order to look as did before. I also fear I may lose more lashes. Thanks in advance. Best regards: emi
>>

Dear emi
Please note that I am NOT a doctor. If it were me, I would assume that the irritation and inflammation was caused by absorption of perming chemicals. It looks like the lids are beginning to settle down. Thank God, your sight is not affected.

I personally would test if I was allergic to chamomile and if not bathe the lids with chamomile tea (see my page for what we do). Dont wipe the tea off, let it dry naturally, it seems to have a drawing action. It may be good to lie down with chamomile tea bags on both lids for about 10 minutes.

You could try castor oil as described on my web page. It may help to soothe the lids and assist healing. You could also ask your doctor if antihistamine tablets or cream might help. They are anti inflammatory and make you feel more comfortable.

You could try homeopathic Euphrasia (eyebright) Tincture. I cannot think of anything else.

Good Luck. Every night when you go to sleep, keep saying to yourself "Every day in every way, I am getting better and better". Such affirmations will help your body heal. Pray to God and ask that healing energy flows through your hands. Then, lay on your side and rub your hands and then place the hand on the bed-side, over your eye. Take deep breaks, hold the breath and then breathe out and imagine that healing energy is flowing to the eye. Alternate sides until you fall asleep.

Then be patient with your body while it works hard to recover. And, please do not abuse your body - health is more important than beauty.

Bye for now

I don't know what USP is - but if you bought the oil from a pharmacy, it should be OK. Just use a little to begin with. The oils sold in Indian foodstores are likely to be more suspect.

G'day,
I live in Australia and just a month ago I've been diagnosed with Blepharitis. I've also been suffering from seborrheic dermatitis for the last 12 years.

After reading your very informative forum I've decided to give a go yesterday. The problem is that I can't find Virgin Castor Oil but only Castor Oil BP (the Gold Cross brand I found says "Contains Castor Oil BP 1mL/mL". That's the only one they had at the chemist. It does says on the label "used externally for its emollient effect on the skin". The chemist didn't know about any virgin castor oil.

Is that the correct one? Or should I try to get a cold pressed castor oil instead?

Thanks a lot for your precious help

Hi Di

I am sorry for the delay in reply.

Virgin Castor Oil is just cold pressed oil. You should be OK with the brand you mentioned since others have found that it worked for them. Good Luck. My husband also has the same problem with warts. I wonder if the two conditions are connected. We have been unable to get rid of it so far - see my page on warts which I need to update to include other remedies we have tried. But, banana skin has helped a bit. He has the warts on his back, and it is difficult to keep the banana skin in place there overnight. If your warts occur in places where they are more easily treated, do give it a try and report back.

Good Luck.

Hi Mahes,

Just read the recent post for the Australian, Di, who couldnt find Organic Virgin Castor Oil (cold pressed). I just recieved some in the mail after ordering it from echolife.com.au ...an Australian website/company.

A question for you though, the Castor Oil is a 'Carrier' oil... which is used also to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin Ive found. This Carrier type of castor oil should be ok to apply to the skin directly yes?

Thanks

# Carrier Oils @ Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:43 PM

Hi Rick

Carrier oils may not be extracted in the same way as cold pressed oils. So, I am not sure if they are 'safe' for the eye lids. It really depends on whether you trust the source. I would not use oils from some Indian supermarkets for example, because it is well known that some oils are adulterated. This is one reason why the doctors will not suggest anything other than proprietary preparations.

Hello Grant

Many thanks for your post.
My webpage on blepharitis is still at:
http://rani.aeshost.net/Medical/NHS/Experiences/Blepharitis/Blepharitis.html

The blepharitis forum was run by someone else and I did post quite a lot on there and am sad that it has been taken down. But, that is the nature of the web.

I do applaud your desire to help others. Perhaps you can set up your own website - most ISPs offer web space and will host pages. I am sorry I will have to remove your post since I cannot edit it and I do not allow direct email communication via the blog. Please feel free to re-post a succinct comment without embedded links.

After some bad experiences - and even now I keep getting malicious postings which I have to filter out, I am somewhat wary about collaborating with strangers. I have turned down similar offers from others.

I have stated everything I know in my own page:
1. Castor oil and chamomile worked for us
2. They do not help those whose bleph is due to allergies - these could be to food/medicine and to air-borned, water-borne and other allergens.
3. Eye irritation can also be caused by dry eyes, which can lead to crystals forming in the eye, causing lacerations and infections. You can get salt drops to alleviate this problem (e.g. CelluVisc) or you may need something stronger (my husband uses FML for his blind sick eye).
4. Blepharitis can be made worse by a diet which encourages the yeast Candida Albicans. We have got rid of this problem with Acidophilus (we use Quest) and through regular use of natural biolive yoghurt. We get a very good brand here but a lot of yoghurt is not pure, so you need to read the ingredients. Otherwise, learn to make your own making sure that you boil the milk.

I wish you speedy recovery from bleph and good luck with your venture.

I tried the castor oil, day 1 it took the redness down, but by day 2 it was swollen and redder...day 3 was even worse.

I have been seeing a naturpath and she prescribed Euphrasia(eye bright) and Elderflower dried herbs (2onz each) with 1 ltr. boiling water...steep for 15 mins. Can make fresh compresses all day as long as it is in a sealed container and not reused. Hot or cold.

After 2 weeks my eye looks normal.

Always worth a try, just like the castor oil.

Good luck everyone. Sandy

Yes, euphrasia and eldefflower are also good for the eyes. But, euphrasia is expensive. If you are responding well to euphrasia, you may wish to take Homeopathis euprasia 6c internally,. You put the capsules under the tongue and let the herbal extract get directly into the bloodstream.

I use euphrasia for my hayfever during the season and drink elderflower tea in winter. It is good for colds and catarrh.

I have yet to try the caster oil treatment, or any of the so called cures that I have been told of Mahes.

The major concern that I have is the fact that Caster oil may have bacteria that can create an eye infection.

You said something about that its used After eye surgery to keep the eye from having discomfort.

I would love to hear what method you used Mahes to keep your husband from getting an eye infection from the caster oil.

I also heard that when they used Caster oil after surgery...They also mixed it with antibiotics to keep the person from getting an eye infection.

If you guys find further information on sterile caster oil...which i dont know if you can find the stuff...I am having difficulty in just finding the Virgin, Caster Oil my self.

And something thats not crawling with Bacteria.

What Do you suggest Mahes?...whats my best bet?
For someone From the United States where can I get the stuff you used for your husband?

I heard I could order the same stuff but it has to be shipped from over seas...and you take a risk of contamination.

I talked to some more people and learned of another cure...my uncle is proof of it...some honeys have antibiotic properties...Ill go into detail of this...but Im still researching it. He cured his blepharitis with honey. He had bacterial form which was resistant to antibiotics.

If the rest of you find information about this stuff...I will try it as a second measure...but I think as long as I dont get the caster oil in my eyes i should be fine...

For me I swear I believe that If i was a doctor...that I have demodex mites living in the roots of my eye lashes...and thats why there falling out...So i would follow treatment as such...Thats what Im going to try. This caster oil stuff is supposed to kill them...I hope...Or ill look up what does...I havent started the treatment yet...because its so hard to find that caster oil that you speak of.

I live in the United States. What is the caster oil am I looking for Mahes?

If you could tell me that would be a great help....!

thank you...the only reason why I havent posted a cure yet...is because i have no proof..yet...I havent cured myself...But as soon as I do with in the next month trying these vairous treatments...I will inform you all of my success or failure...Even if im still not cured...the information I have may be able to come up with one...This week I will post a video on Youtube...to explain whats going on with the eyes...and what doctors dont know...

I am sorry that I wont tell you the cures yet...untill i have proof that they work...once I have proof...in a month or so...I will hold up to my claim Mahes.

What was that Caster oil you speak of?...Where can I find the same stuff In the United States? Thanks for your help Mahes
